The science behind Mann.
Journaling is one of the most well-researched tools for mental wellbeing. Here is the evidence that shapes how we build Mann — and the limits of what it can do.
Expressive writing
Pennebaker, 1986; 1997
Writing about emotional experiences for as little as 15 minutes a day, four days in a row, produces measurable improvements in physical and psychological health — fewer doctor visits, lower stress markers, and better immune function. The effect is robust across populations and decades of replication.
Goal achievement through implementation intentions
Gollwitzer & Brandstätter, 1997
Writing down a specific implementation intention ("when X happens, I will do Y") makes you roughly three times more likely to follow through than holding the same goal in your head. Mann's prompts and weekly report are tuned to surface concrete next-week intentions, not vague hopes.
AI-assisted journaling for distress
Meta-analysis of 18 studies, 2023
Conversational AI used as a journaling and reflection partner produced a 23% average reduction in self-reported psychological distress symptoms compared to control. The effect was largest when the AI reflected the user's own words back rather than offering advice — exactly how Mann is prompted.
Pattern recognition and emotional regulation
Multiple sources
Regular structured reflection — re-reading what you wrote, noticing themes, naming feelings precisely — improves emotional regulation and self-awareness. Mann's memory and weekly reports are designed to surface patterns you wouldn't notice from inside the moment.
How we apply this.
We work with mental health professionals to ensure Mann reflects these findings — in the prompt design, the weekly report structure, and the way the AI questions you. If you're a researcher or clinician interested in collaborating, get in touch.
Get in touchMann is not a medical service.
Mann is a journaling and reflection tool — not a medical, psychological, or diagnostic service. It does not provide medical advice, diagnose conditions, or treat mental illness. The research above describes journaling as a general practice; individual outcomes vary and are not guaranteed.
