Where Mann is better
It writes back. Apple's pages describe prompts before you write and nothing after. Mann reads what you wrote and says back the one sentence that was carrying the weight. That is the reason Mann exists, and Apple Journal does not attempt it.
Indian languages. The App Store India listing for Apple Journal lists English. Mann writes back in Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali and Marathi, and was tuned for Hinglish rather than translated into it.
Android. Apple Journal needs an iPhone on iOS 17.2 or later. Mann is on Google Play in 177 countries, and on the App Store in India, the UK and the US.
A week you can read. Apple's Insights view counts streaks and days. Mann's weekly report tells you how the week felt: the mood, the days you wrote, how much, and who kept coming up. Mann shows a streak too, and nothing punishes you for breaking one.
The context. When you write "Papa said the usual thing about the job", Mann does not need the usual thing explained. Apple Journal does not read the entry at all.
Where Apple Journal is better
Price. Free, with nothing to unlock. Mann's writing is free too; voice, unlimited chat and the full weekly report are ₹199 a month.
What the servers hold. Apple's answer to "who can read this" is shorter than ours. Apple says entries in iCloud are encrypted so that Apple itself cannot read them, with a passcode and two-factor authentication on. Mann's servers hold ciphertext too: a private safety screen reads every finished entry once, and the AI reads it in flight to write the reflection.
Sync. Entries appear on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Mann's entries stay on the phone that wrote them, because the key never leaves it.
Voice, free. Apple Journal transcribes a voice recording into the entry at no cost. Mann's voice journaling is on Premium.
Photos, places, health, export. Apple Journal adds photos, videos, the place you were, your state of mind saved into the Health app, and a PDF export. Mann is text and a mood pick, with no export yet.
Who each is for

Apple Journal is for someone with an iPhone who wants to keep the day: the photos, the walk, the song, the mood, in one free place locked behind Face ID. It offers a prompt and then leaves you alone. If you already know what you think and want a record of it, it is a very good record.
