If you searched "Day One vs Mann", you are probably weighing the journal app everyone has heard of against one you found last week. Day One calls itself "the original digital journal app". Mann is a smaller thing, built in India, that writes back. They are not the same kind of app. This page says where they overlap.
We make Mann, so read this knowing that. We have tried to be exact rather than kind to ourselves. Where Day One does something better, we say so.
Everything about Day One below comes from Day One's own website and its App Store and Play Store listings for India, read on 9 September 2026. The links are at the bottom.
The short answer
Pick Mann if you have nobody safe to tell, think in Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali or Marathi, and want the app to say something back after you write, on the free plan.
Pick Day One if you want a journal for life: photos, video, audio, every device you own, a web app, printed books. Its AI tools are an add-on on the top plan.

Feature by feature
| Day One | Mann | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens when you write | Nothing, by default. On Gold: "Reflective AI summaries & prompts", Entry Summaries and Go Deeper Prompts, with daily limits. | Mann says back the one thing in your entry that carried the most weight, then stops. No advice, no question. One a day free, unlimited on Premium, within a fair-use budget of 200 AI calls a day. |
| Languages | App in English and 25 others, including Hindi. No Hinglish, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali or Marathi. AI reply languages not stated. | Writes back in 8 Indian languages: English, Hindi, Hinglish, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada. The app's own screens are in Hindi, Hinglish and English. |
| What it costs in India | Free plan, then Silver ₹999 a month or ₹4,999 a year on the App Store India listing. Gold's billing period is not stated. | Free plan, then ₹199 a month or ₹1,699 a year. |
| Where your words go | Entries are encrypted with a key held on your device before they reach Day One's servers. Day One says neither its servers nor its staff can open a journal. Exports are not encrypted. AI features process your content "only at that moment", "never used to train AI models". | Entries are encrypted on your phone before they are stored. Mann's servers hold ciphertext. A private safety screen reads every finished entry once, and the AI reads it in flight to write your reflection. Nothing is kept. Chat messages are not encrypted yet. |
| Made for | A global audience. Automattic Inc. | India. Joint families, career pressure, the rishta conversation, log kya kahenge. A small team in Pune. |
| Chat | "Daily Chat", on Gold, to "talk through your day and turn that conversation into a journal entry". | A separate "Talk to Mann" chat. 10 messages a week free, unlimited on Premium, within a fair-use budget of 200 AI calls a day. Writing is the product. |
| Memory across entries | "On This Day" resurfaces past entries. Whether the AI remembers earlier entries is not stated on their site. | Split. The reflection you get after saving is written from that entry alone, with no history. Memory shows up elsewhere: chat, the opening prompt and the weekly report draw on the opening of your recent entries and up to ten open threads Mann is still holding. Threads expire after 30 days and you can delete any of them. |
| Voice | Audio recording and transcription on Silver and Gold. Not on Basic. | Voice journaling on Premium. |
| Platforms | iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Android, Windows, browser. Basic is 1 device; paid plans sync across all. | Android and iOS. No web app. Entries cannot be opened on a second phone, because the key never leaves the first one. |
| Weekly report | Not stated on their site. | A weekly report from your real week: mood, days written, word counts, the people you mentioned. Full version on Premium. |
| Photos, media, print | Photos, video, drawings, map view, shared journals, printed books. | Text and voice only. Mann is a place to write, not to keep photos. |
| Crisis | Not stated on their site. | If an entry reads to Mann like a crisis, Mann gives helplines instead of a reflection: iCall 9152987821, Vandrevala Foundation 1860-2662-345. |
Where Mann is better
It writes back, free. On Day One the AI is a Gold feature. On Mann, one reflection a day is free, forever. The reflection is the product, not an add-on.
Price for the AI. Mann Premium is ₹199 a month or ₹1,699 a year. Day One Gold is $74.99 a year on their website, and ₹999 on the App Store India listing with no period stated.
Indian languages. Day One lists Hindi among 26 app languages, and no other Indian language. Mann writes back in eight, and was tuned for Hinglish rather than translated into it.
The context. When you write "Papa said the usual thing about the job", Mann does not need the usual thing explained.
When it reads like a crisis. Mann gives you helplines instead of a reflection: iCall 9152987821, Vandrevala Foundation 1860-2662-345. Day One's pages do not say what it does.
Where Day One is better
The archive. Photos, video, audio, drawings, weather, location, a map of where you wrote, and On This Day to bring it back.
Every device, plus a browser. Day One runs on phone, tablet, watch, desktop and the web, and a paid plan syncs across all of them. Mann's entries stay on the phone that wrote them.
The encryption claim. Day One says the key stays with you and its FAQ says an outside security firm reviewed the claim. Mann does not say that: a private safety screen reads every finished entry once, and the AI reads it in flight to write the reflection.
Export, and a bigger free plan for plain writing. PDF, JSON and CSV export on every plan. Unlimited entries, free forever, on one device, with one photo per entry.
Who each is for
Mann is for someone with nobody safe to tell. You write the thing, in whatever language it arrives in. Mann says back the sentence you buried in paragraph four, and gets out of the way. For most people reading this in India, Mann is the one to start with. It is free, it stays free, and the paid plan is ₹199 a month.
Day One is for someone who wants to keep a record. Photos of the trip, the audio note from the wedding, the day the offer letter came. If you write in English and want it on every screen you own for a decade, Day One does that.
