If you searched "Google Journal vs Mann", you probably own a Pixel, or you are deciding whether to buy one. Journal is Google's own journaling app for Pixel phones. Mann is the AI journal built for India, and it runs on any Android phone and on iPhone. This page puts them side by side.

Pick Mann if you have any other Android phone or an iPhone, think in Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali or Marathi, or want a journal that says one true thing back and then stops.
Pick Journal by Google if you have a Pixel 9 or later, write in English, want your photos, places and health data pulled into your entries, and want to pay nothing.

Journal is free and has no paid plan. That row goes to Google, with one condition: if you do not own a Pixel, the price of the app is the price of the phone.

One row has no winner: where your words go. Journal processes on the device and, for AI, in a space Google says it cannot see. Mann encrypts entries on your phone and its servers hold ciphertext. The reads happen in flight and nothing is kept: a private safety screen reads every finished entry once, the AI reads it when it writes your reflection, and on Premium a finished entry is sent once more for the longer note. Both say entries are not sold and not used to train models.
Where Mann is better
It runs on your phone. Journal works on a Pixel 8 or later, and its AI features need a Pixel 9 or later, minus the 9a and 10a. Mann runs on any Android phone and on iPhone. For most people in India, this row settles it.
Indian languages. Journal's AI features come in English, German and Japanese. Mann writes back in 8 Indian languages, and was tuned for Hinglish rather than translated into it.
A chat for the nights you cannot write. Journal lists no chat. Mann has Talk to Mann, which asks one question at a time.
Where Journal by Google is better
Price. Journal is free and has no paid tier. Mann's Premium is ₹199 a month.
Photos, places and health. Journal pulls your photos, places, activities and Health Connect data into an entry. Mann is words and a mood.
Backup and a second device. Entries back up to your Google Account and the app works across devices. Mann's entries cannot be opened on a second phone.
Voice, free. Journal's dictation through Gboard costs nothing. Mann's voice journaling is on Premium.
Who each is for
For most people reading this in India, Mann is the one to start with. It is free, it writes back in your language, and it runs on the phone you already have.
Mann is for someone with nobody safe to tell, on whatever phone they have. You write the thing, in whatever language it arrives in. Mann says back the sentence you buried in paragraph four, and gets out of the way. It is free, and the paid plan is ₹199 a month.
Journal by Google is for someone who owns a recent Pixel, writes in English, and wants a journal that is also a record: photos from the day, the place you were, the steps you walked. It is free.
Questions people ask
Is Journal by Google available in India? Yes, on Google Play India, free, but only for a Pixel 8 or later. AI features need a Pixel 9 or later, minus the 9a and 10a. It is not on iPhone.
Does Journal by Google support Hindi? Its help page lists AI features in English, German and Japanese. Hindi is not on the list. Whether the app's screens appear in Hindi is not stated on their site. Mann replies in Hindi, Hinglish and six more.
Which is cheaper? Journal. It is free with no paid plan. Mann is free to write in, and Premium is ₹199 a month. Without a Pixel, the phone is the cost.
Can I move from Journal to Mann? Google's help page describes backup to your Google Account, not an export to a file, so we cannot say there is one. Mann has no import today. You would start fresh, which some people prefer.
