If you searched "Journey vs Mann", you are probably deciding between a diary and a journal that writes back. Journey has been around for a decade, runs on every screen you own, and keeps photos, videos and places. Mann is built for one thing: the sentence you cannot say to anyone at home.
We make Mann, so read this knowing that. Where Journey does something better, we say so, because you will find out the first evening you use it.
Everything about Journey below comes from Journey's own website, its help desk, and its App Store and Play Store listings for India, read on 9 September 2026. The links are at the bottom.
The short answer
Pick Mann if you write to understand yourself rather than to keep a record, want something to say back the thing you buried, and think in Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali or Marathi.
Pick Journey if you want a diary that syncs across your phone, laptop and browser, holds photos and videos, prints to a book, and you would rather pay once than subscribe.

Feature by feature
| Journey | Mann | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens when you write | On iPhone, "Reflections" asks follow-up questions on an entry, using on-device AI. Needs iOS 26 with Apple Intelligence. On Android, not stated on their site. | Mann says back the one thing in your entry that carried the most weight, then stops. No advice, no question. Android and iOS. |
| Languages | 15 app languages on the App Store listing. No Indian language. | Writes back in 8 Indian languages: English, Hindi, Hinglish, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada. The app's own screens are in Hindi, Hinglish and English. |
| What it costs in India | Membership ₹699 a month or ₹2,499 a year (App Store India). One-time licences from ₹1,999. | Free plan, then ₹199 a month or ₹1,699 a year. |
| Where your words go | Google Drive sync keeps entries in your own Drive. On Membership, an optional passphrase mode encrypts entries on your device before upload, and Journey says its staff cannot open them. Search is off in that mode; a lost passphrase means lost entries. | Entries are encrypted on your phone before they are stored. Mann's servers hold ciphertext. Your words are read in flight, not at rest: a private safety screen reads every finished entry once, even one that gets no reflection, and the AI (Google Gemini) reads it when it writes your reflection. Nothing is kept. Chat messages are not encrypted yet. |
| Made for | A global diary keeper. Two App Studio, Singapore. | India. Joint families, career pressure, the rishta conversation, log kya kahenge. A small team in Pune. |
| Chat | Odyssey AI, on Membership, answers questions about your past entries. A WhatsApp chat can be saved as an entry. | A separate "Talk to Mann" chat, 10 messages a week free, unlimited on Premium, within a fair-use budget of 200 AI calls a day. Chat messages are not encrypted yet. Writing is the product. |
| Memory across entries | Odyssey AI draws on your past entries. Throwback shows entries from a week, a month, or years ago. | Split. The reflection you get after saving is written from that entry alone, with no history. Memory shows up elsewhere: chat, the opening prompt and the weekly report draw on the opening of your recent entries and up to ten open threads Mann is still holding. Threads expire after 30 days and you can delete any of them. |
| Voice | Audio recordings attached to an entry. Voice-to-text is not stated on their site. | Voice journaling on Premium. |
| Platforms | Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Linux, Web, Chrome OS. One Membership unlocks all of them. | Android and iOS. No web app. Entries cannot be opened on a second phone, because the key never leaves the first one. |
| Weekly report or insights | Mood over 30 days in Stories. Calendar, map and timeline views. No weekly report stated. | A weekly report from your real week: mood, days written, word counts, the people you mentioned. Full version on Premium. |
| Photos, media, export | Photos, videos, audio, weather, location. Export to DOCX, PDF and ePub. Print to a book. Shared journals with family. | Text and voice, no export today. Mann spends the effort on saying something back instead. |
| Crisis | Not stated on their site. | If an entry reads to Mann like a crisis, Mann gives helplines instead of a reflection: iCall 9152987821, Vandrevala Foundation 1860-2662-345. |
Where Mann is better
A reflection, on any phone. Mann says back the one sentence that carried the weight, on Android and iOS, on the free plan, once a day. Journey's Reflections needs an iPhone on iOS 26 with Apple Intelligence; its Android listing does not mention it.
Indian languages. Journey's 15 languages include no Indian language. Mann writes back in Hindi, Hinglish, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, and was tuned for Hinglish rather than translated into it.
Monthly price. ₹199 against ₹699. Yearly the gap is smaller, and Journey's one-time licence is a real answer for some people. Paid monthly, Mann is cheaper by a wide margin.
The context. When you write "Papa said the usual thing about the job", Mann does not need the usual thing explained. Journey is a diary for anyone, anywhere. Mann is for here.
When it is heavier than a bad day. If an entry reads like a crisis, Mann gives you iCall (9152987821) and the Vandrevala Foundation (1860-2662-345) instead of a reflection. What Journey does then is not stated on their site.
Where Journey is better
Everywhere you are. Phone, laptop, browser and tablet, one Membership for all of them. Mann is a phone app, and entries cannot open on a second phone.
A record of your life. Photos, videos, audio, weather, the place on a map, and a printed book at the end of the year. Mann keeps text and voice.
Memory. Odyssey AI answers questions about your past entries, and Throwback surfaces old ones. Mann's reflection is written from the entry alone. Its memory sits in chat, the opening prompt and the weekly report, and reaches back about a fortnight.
Your data, your way. Keep entries in your own Google Drive, or turn on the passphrase mode, where Journey says its staff cannot open them. That mode also turns off search, and a forgotten passphrase costs you the journal. Mann's servers hold ciphertext; a private safety screen reads every finished entry once, and the AI reads it in flight to write the reflection.
One-time pricing, and programs. ₹1,999 for one platform or ₹19,900 for life; Mann is subscription only. Journey has more than 60 coach programs; Mann has seven.
Who each is for
Mann is for someone with nobody safe to tell. You write the thing, in whatever language it arrives in. Mann says back the sentence you buried in paragraph four, and gets out of the way. For most people reading this in India, Mann is the one to start with. It is free, it stays free, and the paid plan is ₹199 a month.
Journey is for someone who wants to keep their life. You take the photo, tag the place, write a few lines, and it is there on every screen you own, for years. The free version has no end date.
