If you searched "Penzu vs Mann", you are choosing between a journal that keeps your words and a journal that answers them. Penzu is the free online diary people have used for years, on browser, phone and tablet. Mann is a journal that writes back, built for India. This page puts them side by side.
We make Mann, so read this knowing that. Where Penzu does something better, we say so, because you will find out anyway the first evening you use it.
Everything about Penzu below comes from Penzu's website and privacy policy, and its App Store and Play Store listings for India, read on 9 September 2026. The links are at the bottom.
The short answer
Pick Mann if you want the entry to say something back, you think in Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali or Marathi, and you want every entry encrypted on your phone from the first one, free.
Pick Penzu if you want a plain diary with no AI in it, that opens in a browser and on every device you own, and you write in English.
Price, side by side
| Penzu | Mann | |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Free, no expiry. Unlimited entries, mobile apps, basic covers and fonts, simple reminders. No encryption lock. | Free, no expiry. Unlimited entries, one AI reflection a day, 10 chat messages a week, on-device encryption. |
| Monthly | ₹299 (Penzu Pro, App Store India). $4.99 in the store descriptions. Play India shows no rupee figure. | ₹199 |
| Yearly | ₹1,199 (Penzu Pro, App Store India). $19.99 on the website. | ₹1,699 |
| Higher tiers | Pro+ $49.99 a year, Pro+ Lifetime $199.99, on the website. A one-time "Penzu Pro Upgrade" at ₹1,999 on the App Store India listing. | None. |
| Trial | "Penzu is always free" on the website. No trial stated. | No trial. Free plan has no end date. |
The App Store India listing calls both subscriptions "Penzu Pro Subscription" and does not say which is monthly; the description's $4.99 a month and $19.99 a year settle it.
Month to month, Mann is ₹100 cheaper. Year to year, Penzu Pro is ₹500 cheaper. The arithmetic cuts both ways.
Feature by feature
| Penzu | Mann | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens when you write | Nothing. Penzu saves the entry. Its privacy policy says entries "are not processed by artificial intelligence systems". | Mann says back the one thing in your entry that carried the most weight, then stops. No advice, no question. |
| Languages | English only on the App Store India listing. Not stated on the website or the Play listing. | Writes back in 8 Indian languages: English, Hindi, Hinglish, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada. The app's own screens are in Hindi, Hinglish and English. |
| What it costs in India | ₹299 a month or ₹1,199 a year (App Store India). Play India shows no rupee figure. | Free plan, then ₹199 a month or ₹1,699 a year. |
| Where your words go | Entries are stored on Penzu's servers, "private by default". Free: a Basic Lock, a second password that support can reset. Pro: an Encryption Lock, 256-bit AES on the server. Penzu says the lock keeps the company from reading a locked entry. A lost lock password means the entry is gone. | Entries are encrypted on your phone before they are stored, on the free plan too. Mann's servers hold ciphertext. Your words are read in flight, not at rest: a private safety screen reads every finished entry once, even one that gets no reflection, and the AI (Google Gemini) reads it when it writes your reflection. Nothing is kept. |
| Made for | A global, English-first audience. Penzu Inc., Toronto. | India. Joint families, career pressure, the rishta conversation, log kya kahenge. A small team in Pune. |
| Chat | None. | A separate "Talk to Mann" chat. 10 messages a week free, unlimited on Premium, within a fair-use budget of 200 AI calls a day. Chat messages are not encrypted yet. |
| Memory across entries | No AI memory. Penzu emails you links to past entries later. | Split. The reflection you get after saving is written from that entry alone, with no history. Memory shows up elsewhere: chat, the opening prompt and the weekly report draw on the opening of your recent entries and up to ten open threads Mann is still holding. Threads expire after 30 days and you can delete any of them. |
| Voice | Not stated on their site or store listings. | Voice journaling on Premium. |
| Platforms | Web browser, iOS, Android, tablets. Unlimited devices, synced. Writes offline. | Android and iOS. No web app. Entries cannot be opened on a second phone, because the key never leaves the first one. |
| Weekly report | None stated. | A weekly report from your real week: mood, days written, word counts, people mentioned. Full version on Premium. |
| Photos, tags, export | Photos free. Tags, PDF export, custom covers and fonts, writing by email on Pro. | Text entries and a mood pick. Two free guided programs (gratitude, sleep), seven on Premium. |
| Deleting your account | Within 30 days of a request, backups up to 90 days more. | From inside the app. Immediate and permanent. |
| Crisis | Not stated on their site. | If an entry reads to Mann like a crisis, Mann gives helplines instead of a reflection: iCall 9152987821, Vandrevala Foundation 1860-2662-345. |
Where Mann is better
It writes back. This is the whole difference. In Penzu the entry sits there. In Mann you save, and the app says back the sentence you buried in paragraph four. Then it stops. If you have nobody to say the thing to, that one line is the point.
Encryption from the first entry, free. On Penzu, the encryption lock is a Pro feature. On Mann, every entry is encrypted on your phone before it is stored, free, from day one. Be clear about the trade: Penzu's Pro lock keeps Penzu out of a locked entry, and Mann's safety screen and AI still read yours once, in flight, to reply. The difference is the default, and where the key lives.
Indian languages. Penzu's App Store India listing says English. Mann writes back in Hindi, Hinglish, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, tuned for Hinglish rather than translated into it.
The monthly price. ₹199 against ₹299.
When it reads like a crisis. Mann gives you helplines instead of a reflection: iCall 9152987821, Vandrevala Foundation 1860-2662-345. Penzu's pages do not mention this.
The context. When you write "Papa said the usual thing about the job", Mann does not need the usual thing explained.
Where Penzu is better
Everywhere at once. Penzu opens in any browser, on iOS, Android and tablets, and syncs between them. Mann is on one phone; the key does not leave it.
No AI at all, if that is what you want. Penzu's privacy policy is explicit: entries are not processed by AI systems. A private safety screen reads every finished Mann entry once, and the AI reads it in flight to write the reflection.
The yearly price. ₹1,199 for Penzu Pro against ₹1,699 for Mann. Penzu also sells a lifetime plan. Mann does not.
A diary that looks like yours. Covers, fonts, photos, tags, PDF export, writing by email. Mann is a page and a mood pick.
Who each is for
Mann is for someone with nobody safe to tell. You write the thing, in whatever language it arrives in. Mann says back the one line carrying the weight, and gets out of the way. For most people reading this in India, Mann is the one to start with. It is free, it stays free, and Premium is ₹199 a month.
Penzu is for someone who wants a diary, full stop. You write, it keeps it, it is on every screen you own, and nothing reads it. If you write in English and like a journal you can dress up, Penzu is built for that.
Questions people ask
Is Penzu available in India? Yes. It is on the App Store India and Google Play India. The App Store listing shows rupee prices; the Play listing does not.
Does Penzu support Hindi? Its App Store India listing lists English only. Its website and Play listing do not list languages. Mann replies in 8 Indian languages.
Which is cheaper? It depends on how you pay. Monthly, Mann: ₹199 against ₹299. Yearly, Penzu: ₹1,199 against ₹1,699. Both free plans have no end date.
Can I move from Penzu to Mann? Penzu's privacy policy says you can download your entries. Mann has no import today. You would start fresh, which some people prefer.
If that is what you were looking for
Writing in Mann is free, as much as you like, with one AI reflection a day and 10 chat messages a week. Premium is ₹199 a month or ₹1,699 a year. Get Mann here.
Or don't. A paper notebook does most of this, and we say that on every page. So does Penzu, and it syncs. The one thing neither does is say back the sentence you buried in paragraph four.
Still deciding? This page is one of thirty. The whole set, with prices in rupees and the rows each app wins, is in Best AI journaling apps in India.
